In last two posts about the Doctrine of the Mean Zhong Yong, we discussed the wisdom of King Shun. At the end of this quotes of Confucius, the sage explained the basic principle of the Doctrine of the Mean Zhong Yong. He said, '(King Shun) prevented the extreme behaviour/thought and managed the common people's affair according to the righteousness.'

I think this is the soul of the Doctrine of the Mean Zhong Yong. It produced an great effect on Confucius and Mencius' thought. Many version of the Doctrine of the Mean in modern Chinese translate this sentence like following words, 'King Shun balanced the different opinions of his people and find a middle course/eclectic solution.' This is completely wrong. The core of the Doctrine of the Mean is absolutely not compromise.
