Mencius 20: king Hui of Wei state

King Wen of State Teng asked Mencius,
'Teng is just a small state. It's located between State Qi and State Chu. They're all big states. Should I attach Teng to Qi or Chu?'

Mencius replied,
'It's too difficult to give you an advice for me. There is one solution if you must ask for a suggestion, to excavate your moat deep, reinforce your rampart and then pledge to fight to the death in defending your state with your common people together. The common people will die for their state and not escape. You may do something if you can do that.'
